MELAQUE AND BARRA DE NAVIDAD
with Dave and Elizabeth Lawrason
March 2008

Robin's brother Dave and his wife Elizabeth spent two weeks with us in March this year. We headed for the Pacific coast driving through Colima, Manzanillo, up the coast to Melaque where we rented a two bedroom casita right on the ocean at Ocean's Village.

On the first day we took a boat tour of the inlet at nearby Barra de Navidad with its many small beaches and restaurants. Across from this village is the famed Grand Bay Hotel and above it another new vacation home owned by Bill Gates.

The Gates house is a huge structure built right above the Hotel on the secure Isla de Navidad. The beautiful new yacht Daedalus was anchored in the marina, rumoured to belong to the Gates cartel as well.

Every evening on the beach in front of our casita, young surfers gathered to catch the waves as the sun set.

On another day we drove about 30 minutes up the coast to the small village of La Manzanilla, a popular (and now expensive) site for people from San Miguel de Allende and points north. We enjoyed lunch at one of the restaurants along the beach. An ecological preserve contains numerous crocodiles on the edge of the village.

Returning to Ajijic we brunched at the luxurious Hotel Real de Chapala on the Lake.

We had a great visit and hope more family comes down to visit us in our "paradise" in Mexico.
