In February 2002, a group of young Canadian musicians organized the first Nothern Lights Music Festival here at Lakeside. Festival Directors, Chris Wilshere and Nathan Brock brought down 12 concert musicians, primarily from the Toronto area to play a series of concerts. I have served as Secretary on the Planning Committee since 2003. Each year the Festival expands with new programs, including providing free concerts for school children and young musicians in the area. In 2006 the musicians provided tea time special concerts for Patrons and added a Jazz Swing Concert to their standard classical repertory.
Past Festivals have received support from the local community as patrons and benefactors as well as from local businesses, The ScotiaBank, and the Canadian Goverment. Plans for Festival 2007 next February are underway with efforts to expand support from sponsors and to give new young musicians an opportunity to work with experienced mentors in their first international concert experience.
