TUTORING PROGRAM BRINGS READING SUCCESS

[Joyce tutoring students]

For the past three years, Joyce Lawrence of the Tutoring Program has been working with “at risk” children at the Center who have failed a grade or are behind in reading skills. Joyce uses a successful tutoring program developed for public schools in California.

The reading program is aimed at seven to eight year olds who are at a critical age. Without reading they cannot succeed in other school subjects or operate a computer. Only one or two children are tutored at the same time so that each can receive maximum attention and feedback from the tutor. The first stage of the program builds incrementally with individual lessons on each letter in the alphabet. Students learn to pronounce, read and eventually write out a passages dictated to them. From there the program progresses to reading fluency and eventually to comprehension. The program provides each student with two hours of training, once a week for a full school year.

Over her three years with the program Joyce has helped a number of children who can now read confidently. Last year, two of her successes, Bryan and Rosa, were among the students who received an A on their year end report card.

In the coming weeks, all students at the Center will be tested for their reading skills to determine if others require assistance. Currently, a new volunteer tutor, Luz Maria, is observing so that she may begin her own tutoring classes. But more tutors are needed to provide assistance to all the children with low reading skills at the Center.
