MARCH 2011
Guest Writer: Donna Esposito

Like a lot of children with big brown eyes, "Jose" (name changed to protect this child) dreams of playing on a soccer team. But it is only recently that he was able to have that dream. At age 7 and a half, Jose’s mother told him it was time to leave home. He was now old enough to go out in the world and support himself. Anabel Frutos, the founder of Love in Action, noticed Jose hanging around on the steps of the near-by church for two consecutive weeks. She asked him about his situation and, when she discovered he was homeless, she invited him into the Center.

Through the Godparents Program at Love in Action, Jose now has two adults in his life. The Godparent’s Program was set up to connect children with interested individuals who would pay a minimum cost of $1,500 pesos per year to help cover school costs, purchase birthday and Christmas presents and take the kids for outings at least once a month. And the kids, who have very little one-on-one adult contact, get to interact with their new adopted “family.”

There’s a unique opportunity in March to meet Jose and other kids like him. Join the Love in Action family for the Second Annual Garden Party and Open House on March 20, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. The theme is “A Mexican Faire” and features a Taco Bar, Entertainment and Cash Bar. Come see the Center and the kids, who will be performing. Tickets are $250 pesos each and are available at Diane Pearl's (on Colon), at the Love in Action Center in Chapala or by calling Bonnie Newman (766-0963) or Weezie Burgess (766-2830.)
